Course Description

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services requires that all healthcare workforce members be trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This course provides essential training on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). Topics covered include the HIPAA Privacy Rules, administrative, technical, and physical safeguards for protected health information, risk analysis compliance information, and policies and procedures. After completing this course, students will be proficient in safeguarding patients’ protected health information and ensuring that the privacy of patients is kept confidential.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the basic principles of the HIPAA Privacy Rule, including its purpose and scope.
  2. Learn about the HIPAA Security Rule requirements, including the administrative, technical, and physical safeguards necessary to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI).
  3. Understand the key terms and definitions used in the HIPAA Rules, including protected health information (PHI) and covered entities.
  4. Learn how to develop and implement effective policies and procedures for safeguarding PHI and ePHI, including training and sanctions for employees who violate HIPAA Rules.
  5. Understand the requirements of the HITECH Act, including its impact on HIPAA and the increased penalties for non-compliance.
  6. Learn about risk analysis and conduct a comprehensive risk assessment to identify potential threats to PHI and ePHI.
  7. Understand the importance of compliance monitoring and reporting, and learn how to develop and implement an effective compliance program.
  8. Participate in interactive discussions and Q&A sessions to better understand HIPAA and HITECH requirements and how to apply them in practice.
