Course Objectives

OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard aims to protect workers from exposure to bloodborne pathogens, which are infectious microorganisms that can cause diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS. The standard requires employers to:

1. Establish an exposure control plan to minimize or eliminate occupational exposures.
2. Implement universal precautions, treating all human blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) as if they are infectious.
3. Use engineering controls, like sharps disposal containers and safer medical devices, to isolate or remove bloodborne pathogens from the workplace.
4. Implement work practice controls that reduce the possibility of exposure by modifying the way tasks are performed.
5. Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) at no cost to the worker.
6. Offer hepatitis B vaccinations to workers with occupational exposure.
7. Provide post-exposure evaluation and follow-up for workers experiencing an exposure incident, at no cost to the worker.
8. Use labels and signs to communicate hazards.
9. Provide training and information to workers, covering all elements of the standard.
10. Maintain worker medical and training records, as well as a sharps injury log.
